---I will temporary suspend my journal logs for the Lorekeepers for a while. As far as I am concerned they only thing they asked of me is to get their damned iPad back. They probably wouldn't care if it cost a Milwaukeean ex-Lorkeeper her life. This seems like a perfect opportunity to just leave the organization altogether, but I honestly owe my life to them.---
Rachel is there. I thank God that we as a group decided to turn back and follow the trucks of our probable pursuers. Because Rachel is there. At the time the others didn't know of course, only seeing the silhouette of a woman but I knew, even from afar in the sparse, bristly woods that Rachel is there. I felt physical knowing that she had been taken and I am too weak to rescue her by myself, luckily the others still gave enough of a damn about the iPad to qualify her rescue as a sound business decision. In total, we counted about eight Crawleys, four on the bus itself with her and four keeping guard outside. Amelie, confident in her distraction skills, managed to get two of the guards to follow her as she rode off on Rachel’s stolen horse. That still left two guards outside. I won’t even to begin to fathom the machinations in Peck’s head that compelled him to think that shooting a blurry a silhouette of Rachel’s captor through a relatively thick window qualified a solid course of action. Thankfully, Billy and I struck some sense into him and he struck one of the outside guards. Billy's aim wasn't shabby either, and he got one too!
We hurried inside the bus to find Rachel surrounded by the men asshole cowards that captured her. Peck shot another guy peon and I slashed the front of a second guard grunt, abruptly ending combat, thanks to some classic intimidation by Peck. I ran to Rachel and embraced her tighter than I should have, but I felt goddamned amazing when she didn’t seem to mind me hugger her the way I did. I guess Billy hugged her too or something. Peck noticed that she didn't have her iPad bag, although at the time I didn't mind.
What are the Madison Lorekeepers going to do with it anyways? If we are only the after the information on it, why not just do what Joey “employed” us to do and get the information on a flash drive? We have those. Why does it matter who has the physical iPad anyways? Is the rivalry between the two colleges so intense that they have to deprive each other of knowledge? Once this is all over and if I have the Lorekeepers to go home to, I sure as hell won’t be doing any more excursions. I was happy doing menial tasks for my peers. Keyword: was. How am I supposed to go back to my life after coming to know everything on this trip?
Anyways, as we waited for Amelie (oh, and Kal) to regroup, I began to have my first prolonged conversation with Rachel. I don’t know what the hell compelled me to do this and I think I’ve been around Peck for too long, but I inexplicably began our chat with “Hey baby”. What the hell!? I immediately caught my error and stammered through different words to try to rectify my mistake, but she laughed, in a good way. She told me that she wanted all of this crap that has happened to her to be over and that all she wants to go North to Green Bay to visit the last place to call home.
I shocked myself. Not because she wanted to run off to Green Bay by herself, but because I wanted to follow her. Although my eyes were completely transfixed towards her at all times, my mind focused on the idea of me moving with her and begin a new life. I smiled as she talked, but what she didn’t know that the reason for my smile was that I was me trying to contain the huge grin that came from imagining myself as a surly pirate regaling his friends with a jaunty tale from the sea. She never once actually asked if I would to accompany her or even imply it, but my heart and mind began to race just thinking about leaving everything behind to be with her. I smiled again because it reminded me of a Harlequin Romance novel that I’ve read, a book from a collection of stories that my superiors assured me are based on realistic depictions of relationships before the End. I remember that I had to quickly regain my composure. The reason I was asked to talk to her is to gather info on her missing bag. Plus, I wasn’t even sure if she felt the same way.
Some more time has passed until an out-of-breath Amelie return to our location, informing us that she had to let go of yet another horse to escape. More importantly, she returned with Rachel’s bag! Right there and then to tell I prepared my group that I will be leaving to Green Bay, but Peck reminded us that we still had to return to Joey, which was ridiculous. We were far away enough from the merchant collective that we could safely avoid Joey, so we weren’t exactly in danger of him sending his goons after us. It’s not like we had what he wanted either, the iPad was still intact but his flash drive was stolen. I suspect Peck’s weird “Honor among Thieves” code or something was at work here, but he was pretty adamant on returning to him, and of course wanted me to sweet talk Rachel into returning south once again. Surprisingly, she was willing to honor Peck’s lame request so we had to pool the remaining gas from the various vehicles around us to the most functioning bus and head back south.
Whatever. What’s one more night of this shit before I’m free?
